What I do . . .

My work is located in three broad areas – research, education/training/presentations and consultancy. All work is designed and developing following discussions with those I am working with. Fees are individually quoted to reflect the nature of the work, associated costs (such as travel) and any other relevant factors. I work with trade union confederations, national trade unions and individual trade union branches.

The best way to proceed is to contact me – we can discuss what you want and how I might be able to help.

Research – a range of projects including assessments of contemporary developments, evaluations of specific initiatives, scoping studies for future projects, overview reports and literature reviews. Recent and current projects include the second stage of ETUCE’s union renewal project (working with Professor Alessandro Arienzo of Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II), a project with NEU looking at use of standardised curricula on teachers’ experience of work (‘Are you on slide 8 yet?’ The impact of standardised curricula on teacher professionalism) and a report for Education International focused on working conditions in the global higher education sector (report forthcoming).

Education/training/presentations – one-off presentations, keynote talks, individual workshops, multi-session workshops. These focus on my core research interests (trade union organising and renewal, building union power) but can be based on any area of my research activity. Most of this activity is delivered in-person, but online is possible (both live and pre-recorded). All sessions are individually adapted to meet the needs of those commissioning the work.

Any work related to ‘Lessons in Organising‘ is delivered in conjunction with the General Federation of Trade Unions.

My keynote address to the 75th Annual Meeting of the Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association (SSTA).

Consultancy – my interests are working alongside trade union officers and activists to think critically about how to build collective capacity and union power. I am currently the project co-ordinator for UCU’s Building to Win project. All this work starts from the unique and specific circumstance of those commissioning the project. Organising with ideas involves reflecting critically on the current context, and collectively formulating strategic responses.
